Squirrel Control & Eradication
When squirrels find a place to nest, this becomes their ‘territory’ and they will protect their territory at all costs, especially when they have young in the nest. This means they can become very agitated and even aggressive when disturbed. There is a common miss-conception that if the animal’s entry hole is blocked this will remove the problem. This unfortunately is not the case.
As a pest it is illegal for pest controllers to catch and release grey squirrels, they have to be dispatched. We use the most humane methods to remove all pest problems including squirrel infestations.
Red squirrels are protected by law and we cannot treat them. In general, if you are experiencing issues with squirrels then it is likely to be grey squirrels.
Species of Squirrel
There are two species of squirrel that cause concern in the UK. The protected red squirrel & the more common grey squirrel. Generally in the North West, you will only come across red squirrels around Formby, Merseyside.
The introduction of the grey squirrel has been the major factor in the red squirrel's decline over the past century, through competition for food and shelter and infection. Grey squirrels have been giving homeowners a headache for decades. Nesting in warm lofts, leaving behind chaos and damaging property due to gnawing. It is best to act as soon as possible when dealing with any potential squirrel problem to try and limit the amount of damage that these rodents can do.
Squirrels are most active during the early hours of the morning therefore they are often heard whilst trying to sleep. Below we have explained some signs that could indicate that you have a potential squirrel problem.
-
Squirrel droppings - Squirrel droppings can be mistaken for rat droppings but are dark brown in colour & round shaped.
-
Gnawing - Squirrels are agile climbers & you might notice gnaw marks on wires, cabling or items stored in the loft.
-
Squirrel nests - Squirrels will use your insulation to nest in - check your loft for these signs.
-
Noises - Squirrels can make quite a racket & can usually be heard throughout the house. These noises can be worse in the morning.
If you have spotted any of the signs mentioned, we recommend acting quickly to ensure the potential infestation doesn’t spread any further. “Had work done on our facias and the roofer noticed that we had squirrels in the attic and recommended M.E.S. They came out the following day and arranged a course of treatments. Got rid of the squirrels and the facias have now been completed. Very efficient. ”
